Description

What is a zip box and pin?

A zip is made up of several parts: teeth, slider, and top and bottom stops. Some of these stops have a zip box and pin.

- On an open-end zip, the zip box and pin are what help to bring the zip teeth together so it can open and close.

- The zip can be damaged if the pin isn’t properly inserted into the zip box. It can cause the zip to come away or the teeth to mesh badly.

- Broken zips aren’t always caused by slider issues, sometimes they’re caused by the bottom stops, i.e. the zip box and pin.

Which size zip box should you choose?

To find the size you need, measure the width of your zip teeth when they’re closed and use the size guide in the product images.

You could also look behind the original zip box, as sometimes the size is written on the back.

If you’re wondering whether to order a size 3 or size 5, please note that size 3 often fits the zips on jean flies or purse pockets and size 5 is the standard size for zips on jackets, hoodies, coats, bags and more.

Top tips for your zip repair

Is the bottom of your zip too damaged to fit the zip box and pin?

Just remove one or two teeth to create the space you need, and you’ll have a clean fabric hem to carry out your zip box replacement. Make sure you pinch the parts with a flat nose plier when putting them on and don’t over tighten them. This will prevent them from becoming brittle or breaking.
